2870 Fossil Infrared

2870 Fossil Infrared - Arches National Park
when I photographed this cool series of "waves" in the sandstone at Arches NP a couple of weeks ago, I just assumed it was only stress features in the rock, but now I am more and more certain they are the tail of a sea scorpion, Eurypterida, from the Permean Period or thereabouts. The Arches brochure dates the Arches salt beds to 300 million years ago, and the Eurypterida were in their late existence then, having gone extinct around 250 million years ago... The features in this photo are just too regularly and uniquely formed... the upward taper fits, and some kind of thinner feature ("stinger" for lack of a better name) appears to have made the patterns at the end of the feature. 2013
